Before that, gamers were used to the company itself creating a massive and comprehensive strategy guide for their Final Fantasy games. Square-Enix, I think they were just Squaresoft at the time, wanted to move on to a more web-based system, probably one using their own company’s web portal, as a substitute for the typical strategy guide.
More hint/faq sites are always welcome, though. In fact, when I was playing Final Fantasy IX, GameFaqs had more info than the official game strategy book. I usually count on GameFaqs for my game info needs. No cake in sight yet, but I’m not at the end of the level. OK, I’m past that first problem, and I think that I can figure out the second problem by myself.
